The lower drawer front is made of … Read more Antique southern sugar chest resting on turned-leg frame with a single lower drawer. The lower drawer front is made of beautifully figured curly cherry while the wood that the top section is crafted from is harder to asertain. Although resembling pine head-on the end grain looks more like cherry, which would match the lower frame and drawer. Both the upper and lower facade exhibit striking natural figure and an aged patina. The hinged top opens to reveal a divided interior well—historically used to store valuable sugar cones and spices under lock and key.

The piece features exceptional period craftsmanship, including hand-cut dovetails on the main carcass and drawer box and hand planed surfaces. The drawer is set with turned wood pulls and would have originally offered storage for sugar nips to cut pieces from the sugar cones. The whole piece is supported by turned ring-and-ball tapered legs, and would make a versatile addition as a dry bar, accent server, entry storage console, or historic conversation piece for the serious collector.

Condition: Good antique condition relative to age. Probably refinished at some point. Historic surface wear, character marks, and age-appropriate oxidation to the interior well. Sturdy construction throughout. See less
