Alexander Ney (Russian-American, 1939–2023), untitled perforated terracotta head, circa 1980s. A compact sculptural head in off-white terracotta, extensively hand-pierced with circular and geometric openings characteristic of Ney’s distinctive ceramic vocabulary. The stylized facial features give the work an archaic, almost archaeological presence while the perforated surface brings a distinctly modern, experimental quality.
Incised “A. NEY” to the underside.
Alexander Ney was known for highly individual ceramic and terracotta sculpture combining figurative forms with elaborate pierced surfaces. His work reflects influences ranging from ancient ritual objects and archaeological fragments to 20th-century modernism.
