Large vintage Japanese low table, also known as a zataku, dating from the 1960s–1970s.
Dimensions: height 31 cm, width 200 cm, depth 89.5 cm.
Weight: approx. 65 kg.
This impressive Japanese table is crafted in warm reddish-brown keyaki wood, also known as Japanese zelkova. The pronounced grain, substantial weight and lively wood structure are beautifully in keeping with this highly valued Japanese furniture wood. The generous tabletop has softly rounded corners, a subtle sheen and a striking natural pattern with knots and dark accents.
The dark areas in the tabletop appear to be natural openings or knots that have been filled with dark resin. This most likely served both a practical and decorative purpose: stabilising and sealing the wood, while deliberately highlighting its natural imperfections. These resin-filled areas are slightly translucent and reveal a warm reddish glow when light passes through them, adding a subtle and distinctive detail to the table.
The elegantly shaped legs give the heavy tabletop a graceful, almost sculptural base. Originally, this type of low table was used in Japan while seated on tatami, for dining, drinking tea, writing or gathering together. Today, it works beautifully as a luxurious low coffee table, statement table or atmospheric Japanese interior piece.
The table is in good vintage condition, with normal signs of use and age consistent with its material, age and function. The tabletop shows light wear, small scratches and natural colour variations, without detracting from the strong presence of the piece.
An exceptionally large and characterful Japanese zataku, with beautiful wood grain, warm patina and a calm wabi-sabi atmosphere.
