The chest sits on a sculptural, waveform black lacquered base with a stepped plinth element — a clear nod to Art Deco silhouettes, reinterpreted in the materials and style of the later 20th century. This type of design sits within the recognizable genre of postmodern "waterfall" chests, popular in the US and Europe during the 1970s–80s, typically produced in small workshops or as series pieces without a fixed maker's mark.
