A remarkable old Japanese tea chest from the Shōwa period, dating from c. 1950–1970. Originally used for storing tea, the chest now has a highly decorative appearance thanks to its full exterior covering of Japanese newspaper paper.
Dimensions: height 49 cm, width 67.5 cm, depth 43 cm.
The exterior is covered with Japanese newspaper fragments, advertisements, typography and illustrations on a warm beige background. This version has a particularly lively graphic character, with large advertising panels, black-and-white newspaper columns, small illustrations and several striking colour accents, including blue and reddish pink. The combination of text, images and advertisements gives the chest a strong vintage look that feels playful, stylish and highly decorative at the same time.
The newspaper covering has been varnished, giving the surface extra protection against wear and a beautiful, lightly glossy finish. The interior is lined with aluminium, reflecting its original function as a practical tea chest. Its spacious interior, sturdy construction and loose lid make the piece highly usable today.
This chest is ideal as a decorative storage box for textiles, magazines, documents, shop materials or other objects. Thanks to its size and strong visual presence, it also works beautifully as a plant stand, low display chest, pedestal or characterful decorative element in an interior or retail space.
The chest is in beautiful vintage condition, with normal signs of age, discoloration and small traces of use consistent with its age, material and function.
A unique and atmospheric Japanese object with a strong graphic presence. The combination of varnished newspaper paper, Japanese typography, aluminium interior lining and sober functional design makes this tea chest a distinctive high-end interior accent for a Japanese, wabi-sabi, vintage, industrial or eclectic interior.
