Antique French artist’s box dating to the early 20th century, circa 1900–1915, with Art Nouveau / Liberty decoration to the lid.
The box opens into an elaborate fitted artist’s set with folding side panels, compartments for paints and drawing materials, a pull-out work surface, and original period contents. Several of the watercolor cakes and crayons are still present, including pieces marked Bourgeois Aîné, Paris, a historic French manufacturer of artists’ materials.
Inside the lid is the original multilingual label reading “Couleurs Sans Danger / Colours Free from Poison”, also associated with Bourgeois Aîné products from this period.
The reverse bears a retailer’s stamp for Garignani / Bertea, Torino, Via Roma 33, an early Turin fine-art shop. The box itself appears to be French and was most likely retailed in Turin by Garignani.
A particularly charming and unusual survivor, both as a decorative Art Nouveau object and as an original early 20th-century artist’s working set.
The set is sold with the antique paints, crayons and accessories currently present, as shown in the photographs. There are expected signs of age and use throughout, including paint marks, surface wear, staining and wear to some of the original materials, all consistent with its age and history as a working artist’s box.
