An exceptional sculpture, finely carved in white alabaster, depicting a young couple, signed by the Tuscan artist Eugenio Battiglia. It is presented on an exquisite oval wooden base, also ornamented with moldings and a carved frieze of vegetal motifs. Signed on the back.

The scene captures a tender moment of innocent courtship or childlike intimacy. The girl, her hair tied back with ribbons and wearing a period dress with a traditional apron, delicately holds a rose in both hands. Her body leans slightly toward the boy, who is dressed in a school uniform (bloomers, a button-down shirt, a neckerchief, and a distinctive peaked cap). The boy looks at her with a smile, holding a pipe in one hand.

Battiglia, who worked primarily in Florence, was renowned for his detailed genre and allegorical sculptures in marble and alabaster. This piece is an excellent example of his technical mastery in portraying the idealized and romantic childhood of the period.

Unlike marble, alabaster is a compact, fine-grained stone; it is smooth, translucent, and lightweight, making it the ideal material for sculpture.
