The counter is constructed from a combination of oak, chestnut and pine and has a substantial 2 cm thick marble worktop, surrounded by a chestnut wood border.

Unlike many old shop counters, this piece is open and usable from both sides. Both sides have open shelving, while one side also has a practical drawer with an old metal handle. This makes the counter particularly suitable for use as a freestanding kitchen island, as storage and the worktop can be accessed from either side.

The wood shows considerable traces of its former working life, with wear, marks, old paint remnants and variations in colour throughout. These have been retained as part of the character of the piece. The marble top also shows signs of age and use.

At 90 cm high, the counter has a practical working height for use as a kitchen island or preparation table. The marble provides a durable work surface and is particularly fitting given the counter's former use in a French patisserie.
