A wonderful antique English rowing crew portrait, capturing the tradition, camaraderie, and distinctive sporting culture of collegiate England. The black-and-white photograph depicts the Christ’s College 2nd Lent Boat of 1937, with the crew formally posed in their distinctive rowing blazers before an impressive college entrance. Particularly appealing is the original presentation surrounding the photograph, with the Christ’s College name, hand-colored heraldic crest, “2nd Lent Boat 1937” inscription, and individual crew names and weights incorporated into the mount.
Presented in a simple period-style black frame, the piece has an authentic, wonderfully understated appearance that allows the historic photograph and colorful crest to command attention. The overall framed piece measures 18 inches wide, 15.5 inches high, and approximately 0.5 inch deep. The photograph itself measures approximately 11.5 by 9 inches. Good antique condition with some age-related wear and discoloring. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Founded in 1505, Christ’s College is one of the historic constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge. Its origins extend back to God’s House, established in the 15th century, which was re-founded as Christ’s College by Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII and a prominent patron of education. Over more than five centuries, the College has been associated with many distinguished scholars and alumni, most famously poet John Milton and naturalist Charles Darwin.
With its strong connection to traditional British rowing, Cambridge collegiate life, and prewar sporting history, this would make an exceptional decorative addition to an English Country interior, gentleman’s study, library, home office, rowing collection, or preppy/Ivy League-inspired room. It would look especially handsome incorporated into a gallery wall alongside antique rowing prints, oars, trophies, school photographs, and other sporting memorabilia.
