Antique double-sided flanged advertising sign produced for two tobacco brands marketed by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. One side advertises Prince Albert Crimp Cut pipe and cigarette tobacco, while the reverse advertises Stud tobacco.
The Prince Albert side features a brightly colored depiction of the familiar red tobacco tin beneath lettering reading “We Sell the National Joy Smoke.” Its projecting flange allowed the sign to be mounted perpendicular to a storefront wall, making both advertisements visible to passing customers.
Advertising two products on a single sign was a practical, cost-saving marketing strategy employed by large American manufacturers during the early 20th century. The contrasting advertisements and unusual double-sided construction make this a distinctive example of antique tobacco advertising.
