Add classic British sophistication to your walls with this exceptional, 242-year-old framed triptych featuring three historic views of the River Thames. These authentic copperplate engravings were originally published in 1784 for William Thornton’s landmark volume, "The New, Complete and Universal History of the City of London." Printed by Alexander Hogg at No. 16 Paternoster Row, this specific sheet captures the beautiful, pastoral riverside villages just outside 18th-century London. Crucially, the titles are printed directly onto the original antique laid paper along the margins, confirming their authenticity as an intact historical sheet rather than modern reproductions or trimmed pieces. The views have been delicately hand-tinted with beautiful watercolor washes that bring the skies, rolling shorelines, and water to life.
The Three Panoramic Views Include (Right to Left):
* View of Roehampton in Surrey: Showing figures angling along the quiet riverbanks.
* View of Hammersmith in Middlesex (Taken from Chiswick): Featuring a classic square-sailed river barge near Lower Mall with St. Paul's Church in the background.
* View of Mortlake in Surrey (From the River Thames): Highlighting the historic 16th-century tower of St. Mary the Virgin church overlooking fishermen at work.
Design & Framing:
The full, uncut page is housed in a handsome, vintage mid-to-late 20th-century vertical gallery frame. The frame features a classic black finish accented by an elegant inner gold-leaf bead border. A custom cream-colored mat beautifully isolates each engraving window, creating an impressive architectural statement piece. It is perfectly suited for Traditional, English Country, Grandmillennial, or Academic interior design styles.

The prints exhibit gorgeous, authentic age toning and minor foxing consistent with 18th-century paper, adding to their historic character. Condition - Frame: The frame is structurally sound, showing light surface wear consistent with age and one corner that has chipping (see photo). It is ready to hang, but would benefit from having its backing removed, placed back in and secured with a modern overlay (see photo). less
