While living in Tokyo, Japan due to corporate transfers between 1975-1978 and, again,1985-1988 I collected detailed hand-painted antique Japanese porcelains from various antique stores in Japan.
. Currently, I am listing my collection of blue and white antique Imari bowls, plates, teacups, hibachis and other antique blue and white, Imari pieces, antique Japanese colored Japanese Imari rice/soup bowls with lids, other colored Imari and some Chinese antique porcelains.
. I am now a retired professional interior designer and was a member of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) for many years.
This antique Japanese porcelain hibachi I would estimate Circa 1880–1905. I, also, have another listed which is very similar and the same size.

The construction and decoration are especially convincing: the substantial rounded body, thick rolled rim, underglaze cobalt-blue painting, repeated chrysanthemum/geometric borders, and continuous mountainous landscape with pines and architecture are all consistent with Meiji-period blue-and-white hibachi. A closely comparable auction example is specifically catalogued as Meiji period and measures 10¼ × 11 inches. Another dealer example, dated circa 1880, is a large, rounded blue-and-white hibachi with mountainous landscape panels.

The blue painting is attractive. Notice how the cobalt ranges from dark blue in the pine trunks and architectural outlines to very pale washes in the distant mountains. That tonal variation is characteristic of brush painting in underglaze cobalt. Blue-and-white Japanese porcelain was made by painting cobalt beneath a transparent glaze; museum examples demonstrate the long Japanese tradition of this technique.

The Met has 17th-century Japanese examples with comparable mountains, architecture and landscape subjects—but the vessel form, decorative density and painting style of mine fits the Meiji hibachi group considerably better. See less
