Standing an impressive 16 3/4 … Read more A striking antique French figural sculpture by Louis Guillemin, depicting a young gardener, or Jardinier. Standing an impressive 16 3/4 inches tall, the figure is beautifully modeled in traditional work attire and a brimmed hat, holding a leafy flowering branch in one hand and a long gardening implement or staff in the other.

Cast in spelter, the sculpture retains its wonderfully aged bronze-tone patinated finish. The figure stands on a detailed naturalistic ground above a substantial stepped circular base. A faint incised Louis Guillemin signature is visible along the base.

The timeworn surface is particularly appealing, with layers of oxidation, tonal variation, finish wear and patina that give the sculpture an authentic Old World character. It has not been polished or refinished, preserving its naturally aged appearance.

A handsome decorative object for a library, study, entry console, mantel or collected European interior, and especially well suited to French Country, traditional, Old World and eclectic spaces

Condition: Good antique condition with significant age-related patina, oxidation, finish wear, discoloration, spotting and surface variation throughout. Oxidation is also present on the underside and hardware. The sculpture has intentionally been left unpolished.
