On the Design:

Among the most resourceful domestic textiles of Anatolia, vintage *Chaput* kilims often derived from the Turkish word for "rag" or "scrap"—represent an ancient tradition of sustainable rural craft. Born in agricultural villages and nomadic encampments, this weaving style relied on a self-sufficient economy where women carefully unraveled worn garments, dowry textiles, and surplus yarns, blending these reclaimed fibers with virgin sheep’s wool to ensure no material was wasted.

Woven on a traditional household loom, this 1950s example relies entirely on continuous vertical stripes, replacing standard geometric motifs with pure, rhythmic color blocking. Striking, wide bands of vibrant brick red are sharply contrasted by grounding channels of deep chocolate brown and bright, un-dyed cream. These spontaneous, organic color shifts reflect the exact moments a weaver integrated different scrap bundles, transforming humble utilitarian recycling into an energetic, modernist layout.
