The two figures face one another, front paws raised and touching, with pricked ears and open, toothy mouths captured in a playful, animated pose.

The bodies are expertly hand-modeled with incised ribbing and rope-like banding around the necks and torsos, finished in a dark, burnished, mottled brown-black surface over a lighter clay body.

A distinct maker's stamp reading "MEXICO" and "CONTE"—framed within a stylized glyph-like border reminiscent of a double-headed serpent motif—appears on the underside of one figure's leg. This mark confirms the piece as a high-quality, mid-century studio reproduction rather than an excavated antiquity, making it a wonderful and highly collectible piece of mid-century Mexican folk art.

The construction is hand-built and hollow, showing authentic tool marks throughout the incised patterning. The pair is fused at the base and paws into a single, stable sculpture. See less
