a beautifully crafted antique mahogany tantalus box, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, presented in a rich, warm mahogany finish with exceptional figuring to the timber.

the square-form box has a wonderfully tactile, traditional character, with decorative inlaid floral and fan motifs to the lid and brass-edged detailing. The front incorporates an original substantial carrying handle, while the sides are fitted with matching darkened metal handles, giving the piece both elegance and practicality.

the box opens to reveal a fitted interior containing four impressive cut-crystal decanters, each surmounted by a distinctive faceted spherical stopper. The crystal catches and reflects the light beautifully, creating a particularly striking contrast against the warm wood interior.

a decorative gold-toned tassel hangs from the front, adding an elegant finishing detail and reinforcing the piece's period character.

a highly decorative and versatile object, this tantalus would make an exceptional addition to a traditional interior, library, study, drinks cabinet or gentleman's dressing room. It would also work beautifully as a statement decorative object when displayed open.

the combination of richly figured mahogany, intricate inlay, original fittings and sparkling cut crystal gives this piece considerable visual presence and makes it an especially appealing example for collectors of antique barware and decorative boxes. See less
