Known as Číňanka (“The Chinese lady”), the lamp takes its nickname from the distinctive broad conical shade, whose silhouette recalls a traditional East Asian hat. The design combines a continuous bent-steel frame with a tapered metal body and an original hand-stitched parchment shade.

Frantová designed the lamp while still studying at VŠUP in Prague. Her exceptional understanding of metal later became central to her work as one of the important figures in post-war Czech studio jewellery, and the same sensitivity to line, material and construction can already be seen in this early lighting design.

The geometry of the frame allows the lamp to be used either freestanding as a table lamp or hung on a wall, while the central body can be adjusted to direct the light.

This example retains its original parchment shade, bulb fitting, wiring and European plug. An additional inline on/off switch was added to the cord, probably during the 1970s or 1980s, and has been retained as part of the lamp's history.

Very good vintage condition with gentle patina and age-related wear. Carefully checked, cleaned and fully functional. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
