A vintage double-sided porcelain advertising sign for Johnson Refining Co. and Ethyl Gasoline Corp. Dating to the 1920s or 1930s, the generously scaled circular sign promotes “Johnson Gasolene with Ethyl,” retaining the distinctive period spelling and bold graphics associated with early American service-station advertising.
Johnson Refining Co. offered several petroleum brands, including Brilliant Bronze and Jo-Re-Co. Its memorable “Time Tells” slogan referred to the company’s claim that automobiles could travel longer between oil changes when using Johnson products. The company was acquired by Standard Oil in 1956.
With its substantial proportions and timeworn porcelain surface, the sign offers an authentic piece of American automotive history. It would make a compelling addition to a petroliana collection, garage, workshop, showroom, restaurant, or industrial-inspired interior.
