Keen eyes may note that mid-century Moroccan Berber weaving is to look far beyond mere geometric design and into the matrilineal soul of the rural Middle Atlas Mountains. Woven exclusively by Berber women, these thick, long-piled carpets were historically born of absolute necessity, created to insulate nomadic and agrarian families against the bitter cold of high-altitude winters. However, the loom also functioned as a canvas for a deeply complex, unspoken language. The weaving process was considered a sacred, meditative act, heavily steeped in local morals and animistic beliefs blended with Islamic tradition.
