A wonderful complete vintage Chinese mahjong set, with all tiles hand-cut from bone and bamboo — you can see the warm ivory patina and fine detailing in the character, dot, and bamboo suits, plus the painted flower and season tiles in vibrant reds, greens, and blues. The set is housed in its original fitted rosewood case with five sliding drawers, each neatly divided to hold the tiles, along with a top compartment for the bone counting sticks and wagering chips.
The case itself is a piece of craftsmanship on its own — inset brass corner hardware, a decorative brass swing handle, and a lift-off lid inlaid with a gilt "longevity" (寿) roundel flanked by hand-painted bats, a traditional symbol of good fortune in Chinese decorative arts.
