Raised in California, he studied at the University of California, Davis and later at Parsons School of Design in New York. Henderson worked as an assistant designer for Calvin Klein before establishing his own label. He became known for clean, practical American sportswear, relaxed silhouettes, strong color and wearable design. He received the CFDA Perry Ellis Award for new fashion talent around 1989–1990 and attracted national attention. In 1990 he introduced the lower-priced 'But Gordon' line and later entered an exclusive retail arrangement with Saks Fifth Avenue. These original fashion drawings are examples of his design process, combining finished fashion figures with garment construction notes, fabric indications and technical sketches.
