I have always heard that three of anything is a 'collection' but with the charming art of the Japanese Kokeshi … Read more I have always heard that three of anything is a 'collection' but with the charming art of the Japanese Kokeshi doll I think these three are a 'party'. This set of large wood Kokeshis appears to be from the 1940's. Each is signed by the artist with only one translated to English, Muhitsu Miyajima. The other two with the top knot hair design seem to be the same artist. They are all from the Atlanta estate of a collector. Traditionally, the Kokeshis were made for children in the late 1800's as good luck talismans. Later, Kokeshis became popular souvenirs for those visiting the Japanese countryside. Perfect as sculptural pieces for a mid 20th century Asian modern decor.

Good condition with some marks to the wood surface from age and storage. There are no cracks or repairs. Kokeshis of this era tend to have subtle decoration though it is possible some of the decoration has faded from these three.

Each kokeshi has a different measurement:
Tallest measures 16" high x 4" at the widest x 4" at the deepest.
Medium measures 12" high x 4" at the widest x 4" at the deepest.
Smallest of the group measures 11.88" high x 3" at the widest x 3" at the deepest. See less
