A striking illuminated barber pole manufactured by Koken Barbers’ Supply Co. of St. Louis, Missouri, circa 1920s. One of the most influential names in early American barbershop equipment, Koken was celebrated for combining practical innovation with highly decorative commercial design.
The substantial cast-metal framework surrounds alternating red and white stained-glass panels arranged in the traditional barber-pole spiral. White porcelain-enamel caps with turned finials finish the upper and lower sections, while repeating geometric and braided motifs give the metal framework an architectural quality rarely encountered in later examples.
When illuminated, the stained glass produces a vivid glow that emphasizes the dramatic contrast between the red and white panels. The pole retains its Koken manufacturer’s plaque, original wall bracket, locking rear access panel, and working key. An exceptional piece of American commercial history suited to a barbershop, retail interior, restaurant, private collection, or industrial-inspired space.
