An atmospheric oil-on-canvas portrait depicting a seated female figure in a graceful, contemplative pose. The woman wears an expansive period gown rendered in deep green, black, gold, and softly illuminated neutral tones, set against a moody, painterly background.
The work emphasizes the silhouette of the gown, expressive drapery, and the contrast between dark passages and luminous areas of color. Its refined palette and decorative, turn-of-the-century sensibility make it a compelling statement for a traditional, Art Nouveau-inspired, Aesthetic Movement, or eclectic interior.
The composition appears closely related to Study in Green and Black, a painting by American artist John White Alexander (1856–1915), completed by 1906 and held in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Met’s work measures 50 × 40 1/8 inches and entered the collection through the George A. Hearn Fund in 1908. The Museum also holds a related smaller oil study, Study in Black and Green (Oil Sketch), attributed to Alexander and dated circa 1906.
The present painting is offered with an unverified attribution. It is not accompanied by documentation establishing artist, date, provenance, exhibition history, or a direct connection to John White Alexander. Accordingly, it is offered as an unsigned or attributed decorative oil portrait with a composition closely related to Alexander’s work, and it is not represented as a confirmed original by John White Alexander.
