A newly framed original pastel portrait of a Scottish Terrier by Gladys Emerson Cook (1899-1976), one of the United States' … Read more A newly framed original pastel portrait of a Scottish Terrier by Gladys Emerson Cook (1899-1976), one of the United States' premier mid 20th century dog (and cat) artists. This adorable scotty is depicted seated alertly on his comfortable pink pillow, showing how his owners pampered him. His wiry coat is rendered in rich charcoal tones with soft, expressive detail. A delicate pink collar and the warm, softly sketched interior background add character and period charm to the composition.

Signed in the lower right, this pastel likely dates from the 1940s or 1950s. The pink and black of the pillow and scotty are complemented by pink and grey double matting and a gilded frame.

Cook knew how to render animals -- she was the author of books called "Drawing Dogs," "Drawing Horses, Cats, & Dogs," "You Can Draw Dogs" and "You can Draw Cats." She loved drawing animals and drew portraits for people who wanted to have their pets likenesses recorded in art form.

This pastel was newly framed in 2026 by Indian King Framers located in the center of Keene, NH. They chose a double matting of grey over pink and a gilded frame.

This pastel is one of a kind, and is in fine shape given its age. Please note that it has some foxing and water stains in places. In other places the pastel is slightly blurry and the paper is faded. These are all depicted in the photos above. See less
