A striking late-19th-century heliogravure after Auguste Rodin (1840–1917), titled Dante et Virgile effrayés par les démons qui surplombent la descente du Cercle (“Dante and Virgil Frightened by the Demons That Overhang the Descent of the Circle”), dating to 1897.
The highly expressive composition depicts Dante and Virgil surrounded by figures and demons, rendered with Rodin’s vigorous, gestural line work. Handwritten elements visible within the composition add to the immediacy and character of the image.
According to the accompanying Certificate of Authenticity, this is Plate No. 3 from “Le Dessins de Auguste Rodin,” published in 1897 by Jean Boussod, Manzi, Joyant & Cie. for Maison Goupil.
The work comes from a single edition of 125 examples on vellum paper, with this example identified on the certificate as No. 116 and signed on the plate.
Presented in an elegant gilt frame with cream matting and gilt inner liner. The traditional presentation beautifully complements the historic French work while giving the relatively intimate image substantial decorative presence.
