An evocative late-19th-century heliogravure after Auguste Rodin (1840–1917), titled “Une de Trois Furies” (One of Three Furies), dating to 1897.
This dramatic work depicts one of Rodin’s haunting female figures in a richly worked composition of deep blacks, smoky grays and warm sepia tones. The expressive face and almost sculptural treatment of the figure are particularly striking, giving the image tremendous presence despite its intimate scale.
According to the accompanying Certificate of Authenticity, this is Plate No. 1 from “Le Dessins de Auguste Rodin,” published in 1897 by Jean Boussod, Manzi, Joyant & Cie. for Maison Goupil. The certificate identifies the work as being from a single edition of only 125 examples, printed on vellum paper.
The certificate further identifies this example as No. 116 and notes that it is signed on the plate.
Beautifully presented with an oversized cream mat, gilt inner liner and substantial classical gilt frame with beaded detailing. The generous framing gives this relatively intimate work the visual presence of a much larger piece and makes it particularly suited for an art collection, library, study or layered gallery wall.
Accompanied by its Certificate of Authenticity, which references Victoria Thorson’s Rodin Graphics: A Catalogue Raisonné of Drypoints and Book Illustrations, San Francisco, 1975.
