The composition is dominated by an extraordinary soaring headdress. At its center is a carefully carved ear of maize surrounded by large sweeping forms suggestive of corn husks or foliage. The elongated face incorporates prominent circular ear ornaments, deeply carved hair and beard detailing, an extended nose and an expressive stylized chin.

The quality of carving is especially apparent from the profile. Rather than being carved as a shallow plaque, the face projects substantially from the back plane, giving the work considerable architectural depth and shadow.

The dark hardwood displays beautiful natural brown and black grain variation, particularly throughout the upper headdress.

Likely mid-to-late 20th century, probably Mexican or Central American in origin. The imagery and carving style are consistent with decorative interpretations of Maya Maize God iconography produced in Mexico and the greater Maya cultural region. Exact maker and place of manufacture are unknown.
