Despite measuring only about 12 inches high, the carving has exceptional visual presence. Deep undercutting creates multiple layers of sculptural relief, from the dramatically textured horns and swept-back hair to the scrolling ornamental surround, prominent nose and extraordinarily long carved moustache and beard.

Perhaps its most compelling feature is the pair of inset eyes, which give the figure an intense and surprisingly lifelike expression. The gaze is oriented slightly downward, making the piece particularly effective when displayed above normal eye level, where it appears to look toward the viewer.

The reverse reveals extensive hand hollowing and openwork consistent with the remarkable depth visible from the front. An existing brass keyhole-style hanger allows the piece to display securely as wall art.

While the imagery relates closely to the fearsome and protective characters found throughout Indonesian carving traditions, we have conservatively described the subject as a demon/guardian figure rather than assigning an unverified specific deity or character.

The dark reddish-brown finish accentuates the hand-carved details and natural variations in the wood.
