A charming complementary pairing of 18th-century Chinese export blue-and-white porcelain, comprising a small handled cup and saucer with related but differing hand-painted decoration in underglaze cobalt blue.
The cup is particularly appealing, with individually framed landscape vignettes depicting a stylized deer in a wooded landscape on one side and a sailing vessel on the other. Floral and geometric ornament surrounds the scenes, while an angular handle gives the diminutive cup an especially distinctive profile.
The saucer features a more expansive waterside landscape populated with traditional architecture, figures, trees, boats and distant mountains, surrounded by a densely painted floral border. Variations in the cobalt brushwork and glaze contribute to the character of these early hand-decorated pieces.
The cup and saucer coordinate beautifully but do not have identical decorative patterns. They are therefore being offered as a complementary antique pairing and are not represented as an originally matched set.
The porcelain displays the surface character expected of pieces of this age, including glaze crazing, discoloration, wear and old imperfections. Particularly lovely displayed among a collection of antique blue-and-white porcelain.
Cup: approximately 3.25” W × 2.6” D × 2” H
Saucer: approximately 5.1” diameter × 1” H
