Once in more vibrant shades, the colours have faded and worn to more muted tones of creams and greens with the detail still very much visible and an attractive feature.
The peony flower symbolises high rank and status in China and is often seen on similar pieces of furniture. The brass hardware is still intact and would have allowed the trunk to be locked to secure the owner's possessions and person effects.
Today it can provide extra storage in a bedroom and would look fabulous as a feature on top of a wardrobe or as a handy side table next to a sofa in a living room. See less
