This lovely little blanket trunk has its original black lacquer finish with the old paintings of peony flowers, a symbol for high rank and status in China and often used to symbolise the importance of the owner. The original finish has faded and muted over time to softer colours against the dark background.
The trunk is made from pine and comes from Shanxi province and possibly produced for an important member of society to house their personal possessions. Its original hardware has been lost or damaged and has been more recently replaced with a with a new, simple brass clasp on the front.
Perfect to use today for storage in a bedroom or as a side table for living area.
