Retaining its original company label and presenting in exceptional, remarkably close-to-new condition, the shelf combines sculptural natural materials with the tailored architectural details that distinguish the best late-20th-century decorative furnishings.

The design is especially compelling in its micro-details. Rounded bamboo rails create the frame, while tightly wrapped rattan bindings articulate the corners and joinery. Gracefully curved brackets give the shelf an elegant wall-mounted profile, and an open geometric gallery across the front introduces the architectural rhythm of traditional Chinese-inspired fretwork. The black woven-rattan surface creates a particularly sophisticated contrast against the warm honey-brown frame.

Great City Traders was a San Francisco-based decorative-furnishings company known for internationally sourced furniture, lighting, decorative objects, tabletop pieces, and gifts for the home. Its collections interpreted a wide range of historic and global design traditions for the American interior-design and retail markets.

Period trade records place Great City Traders in San Francisco’s Western Merchandise Mart, an important wholesale destination for interior designers and retailers. In 1992, the company expanded its presence to High Point, North Carolina—the center of the American home-furnishings industry—and it later operated from North Hamilton Street in the city’s design district. Industry accounts remember Great City Traders as one of the recognizable decorative-accessories resources serving the design trade during the 1990s.

The original label reads “Made in Indonesia expressly for © Great City Traders, San Francisco.” This wording provides meaningful commercial provenance: the shelf was manufactured in Indonesia specifically for the Great City Traders collection, selected for its San Francisco-based assortment, and distributed through the American decorative-furnishings trade. It was not simply an anonymous shelf to which the company’s name was later assigned.

Great City Traders sourced its collections internationally, with surviving labeled pieces documenting production in countries including Indonesia, Portugal, Vietnam, and the Philippines. This shelf reflects that global sourcing model, pairing Indonesia’s established bamboo and rattan craftsmanship with a Chinese-inspired form created for sophisticated American interiors.

The contrast between the natural frame and polished black inset gives the shelf considerable designer range.
