A striking set of three framed equestrian prints from “The High Mettled Racer,” the celebrated 1821 sporting series after British … Read more A striking set of three framed equestrian prints from “The High Mettled Racer,” the celebrated 1821 sporting series after British artist Henry Thomas Alken (1785–1851). The set includes “The Foal” (Plate 1), “In Training” (Plate 2) and “The Racer” (Plate 3).

The works bear printed credits to H. Alken and engraver Thomas Sutherland, together with a London publication line dated March 1, 1821, for S. & J. Fuller. They appear consistent with antique hand-colored aquatint impressions. However, they have not been removed from their frames or independently authenticated and are therefore offered as attributed and believed to be period impressions, without a guarantee of the exact printing date.

The framing is especially distinctive. Plates 1 and 3 have black reverse-painted glass surrounds with gold-colored border decoration. Plate 2 is conventionally matted under glass. All three are presented in coordinating silver-tone frames.

Each framed piece measures approximately 22.5 inches wide by 19.5 inches high by 1 inch deep. Sold only as a complete set of three.

The prints exhibit age-related toning, fading and scattered spotting consistent with age. The frames show scratches, spotting, finish wear and wear around the corners. The brown paper dust coverings on the backs have tears, punctures and deterioration. The works have not been examined outside their frames.
