Standing an impressive 77 cm / 30.31 inches tall, this remarkable light has the presence of a luminous architectural sculpture. Its dramatically elongated silhouette recalls a stylized flame, ceremonial torch or slender obelisk, combining classical monumentality with the refined clarity of Italian mid-century design. The diffuser is formed from a single substantial sheet of gently curved glass. Its softly satin-finished surface gradually tapers from a broad lower section to a narrow, rounded crown, while the polished perimeter remains subtly visible and emphasizes the precision of the glasswork. When illuminated, the light source appears as a warm inner flame suspended behind the translucent surface. The satin glass softens the light without flattening it, producing a nuanced transition from an intense golden center to a delicate atmospheric glow along the upper section and surrounding wall. The diffuser is held by an elaborate period brass structure of distinctly architectural character. A broad semicircular brass collar embraces the wider base of the glass, continuing downward into two slender, slightly splayed legs. At the top, a forked brass element rises above the rounded glass and terminates in sharply angled points, while a discreet folded clip secures the diffuser. This unusual arrangement gives the sconce a striking sense of vertical tension: the softly curved and luminous glass appears almost suspended between the upper fork and lower brass cradle. The warm, naturally aged surface of the metal provides a beautiful contrast to the cool satin texture of the glass. Max Ingrand’s background as a master glassmaker and stained-glass artist is particularly evident in the sophisticated control of transparency, reflection and diffused illumination. Here, the glass is not simply a shade but the principal architectural element of the composition, transforming the light into a sculptural presence. Its monumental proportions and extremely shallow depth make the sconce particularly suitable for a narrow wall, hallway, entrance, staircase or the space between architectural openings. It would also make an exceptional solitary statement beside an important doorway, mirror or artwork. The curved glass diffuser is structurally sound but presents a small localized chip to one lateral edge, clearly documented in the photographs. The chip is consistent with age, remains visually discreet when the sconce is installed and does not compromise its stability or use. The glass also displays minor surface marks and traces of age. The brass structure retains its original warm patina, together with oxidation, light scratches and wear consistent with its age. These surfaces have intentionally not been over-restored, preserving the authentic character of the piece. The sconce retains its original period wiring and electrical components.
