Large bronze plaque in high relief, illustrating the myth of Oedipus, specifically the moment when he solves the riddle of the Sphinx: in the center, Oedipus faces the Sphinx, surrounded by figures representing the answer to the riddle—a child on all fours, a young man, and an old man leaning on his cane.
This piece is unsigned but is attributed to Georges Dupré, based on an example held in the collections of the Musée d'Orsay.
Georges Dupré (1869–1909): French sculptor, engraver, and medalist. He trained under Gabriel-Jules Thomas and Oscar Roty, two leading figures in French sculpture and medal making.
In 1896, he won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal and gem engraving and received numerous awards at the Salons. His work primarily consists of bronze medals and plaques, with a predilection for allegorical, symbolic, and religious themes, as well as scenes of contemporary life. His highly detailed compositions, strongly modeled figures, and effects of depth sometimes lend his reliefs a truly sculptural dimension.
The example in the Musée d'Orsay is a smaller version (24 x 19 cm) dated around 1899.
