Entitled "Alma Parens" and bearing the inscriptions "aratro" and "Ense," the title refers to a symbolic Latin motto, which can be literally translated as "The nurturing mother, by the sword and by the plow."
Military defense and agriculture are the two forces that contribute to a country's prosperity.

Piece signed G. Dupré (1869–1909): French sculptor, engraver, and medalist. He trained under Gabriel-Jules Thomas and Oscar Roty, two major figures in French sculpture and medal making.

In 1896, he won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal and gem engraving and received numerous awards at the Salons. His work primarily consists of bronze medals and plaques, with a predilection for allegorical, symbolic, and religious themes, as well as scenes of contemporary life. His highly detailed compositions, strongly modeled figures, and effects of depth sometimes lend his reliefs a truly sculptural dimension.

The Musée d'Orsay owns a smaller version (9 x 13 cm) of Alma Parens' work, dated 1899.
