Measuring approximately 12' x 3'9", the rug has the dramatic elongated proportions associated with runners while offering a much more complex and artistic field than a conventional repeating runner design.

The composition is organized vertically across a remarkably deep navy blue ground. Large curving forms in camel, tan, beige, and ivory create the principal structure of the pattern. These forms are highly stylized rather than naturalistic and appear to combine elements of palmettes, scrolling vines, split leaves, and abstract floral ornamentation. They are surrounded by an extraordinary assortment of smaller motifs, including individual blossoms, rosettes, angular leaves, hooked elements, diamonds, squares, and other geometric details. The result is an almost pictorial surface in which the eye continually discovers new details.

One of the most attractive characteristics of the rug is its unusual color balance. The nearly midnight navy field provides a powerful contrast to the warmer camel, golden tan, sand, ivory, cream, and brown elements. Smaller passages of dusty rose, muted pink, faded red, and burgundy introduce restrained color throughout the field without overwhelming the principal design. More than a century of age has softened these tones and produced subtle variations that contribute greatly to the rug's antique character.

Unlike rugs organized around a single central medallion, this piece uses a continuous vertical arrangement of oversized botanical and abstract forms. The relatively narrow border further emphasizes the field and allows the elaborate interior composition to dominate.
