Wonderful antique Bucks County art pottery wall candle sconce, featuring a rich mottled green glaze and unusual nautical decoration.
The tall slab-form pottery back is decorated with two raised relief panels depicting tall-masted sailing ships or galleons at sea. The ships are highlighted in warm copper, rust and earthy tones against the deep green glazed ground. A projecting semicircular shelf at the bottom incorporates a single candle socket, and the hole near the top allows the piece to be hung on a wall.
The reverse retains an impressed “BUCKS COUNTY” mark. The specific pottery maker has not been definitively identified.
Overall measures approximately 10.5 inches high x 4.25 inches wide x 3 inches deep.
Estate fresh antique condition with scattered chips and glaze losses around the outer edges, candle cup and base, along with glaze irregularities, surface wear, small nicks and other signs of age. The reverse shows considerable kiln/glaze variation typical of handmade pottery. Please examine all photographs closely for exact condition.
A particularly attractive piece of American art pottery with strong Arts & Crafts styling, wonderful nautical imagery and an excellent old green glaze.
