It is a low, elongated table for the space in front of a sofa, built from two materials that warm to each other rather than compete.

Roman travertine is the stone of ancient Rome, formed in the mineral springs around Tivoli and used across the Colosseum and the colonnades of St Peter's Square. It carries a soft, creamy beige tone, its delicate linear veining and gently layered structure warmer and more understated than the marbles. The base answers in solid European oak, its honey-toned, open grain warming to the stone above so the travertine and oak settle into a single, considered pairing. Each top is cut from the block it came from, so no two of these Roman travertine and oak lounge tables share the same figure.

The oak does the work of holding the stone up. Two solid oak boards interlock at right angles into a cross-leg base, one passing cleanly through the other, the joinery left in full view as the piece's single gesture of craft. Stone meets wood with nothing worked in between them.

Quiet and composed, the Roman travertine and oak lounge table holds a room without demanding it, as at ease in front of a sofa as anywhere. The Palm is an Italian lounge table made to order in Cantù, in Lombardy's long-established furniture district, drawn from full-slab stone, solid timber, and premium Italian glass. See less
