Calacatta Viola is an Italian marble quarried in the Carrara region of Tuscany, known to Renaissance Florence as Breccia Medicea, the marble of the Medici. Across a cool white ground run veins of violet, burgundy and plum, drawn with the loose confidence of brushwork rather than the regularity of geology. The oak answers in kind: solid European oak smoked to a near-black brown, its grain still legible beneath the finish, so the marble and oak read as two tones of a single warmth. Every top is cut from its own block, so no two of these Calacatta Viola marble and oak dining tables are quite alike.

Underneath, a solid oak base carries the weight. Two boards are set perpendicular and slotted one through the other into an interlocking cross-leg structure, the join shown rather than hidden, so the craft of the piece and the support of it are one and the same.

Low in its demands and clear in its intent, the Calacatta Viola marble and oak dining table sits at the centre of a dining space without asking for attention. The Hakata is an Italian dining table made to order in Cantù, in Lombardy's long-established furniture district, drawn from full-slab stone, solid timber, and premium Italian glass. See less
