Depicting the serene upward-facing visage of a woman, the sculpture is sensitively modeled with stylized features, elongated proportions and a quiet, contemplative expression.

The richly aged wood retains an exceptional warm patina, highlighting the hand-carved surface and subtle tool marks. The compact scale and strong sculptural presence make it particularly well suited for display among modernist, folk art and studio craft collections.

Born in Jacmel, Haiti in 1917, Lafontant trained at the professional school of J.B. Damier and later studied for a year at New York’s Art Students League. He received a prize at Haiti’s 1946 Bicentenary Exposition, recognition that established his standing among the notable Haitian sculptors of his generation. His work is also documented in John Allen Franciscus’s Haiti: Voodoo Kingdom to Modern Riviera.

A wonderful example of mid-century Haitian modernism, combining traditional hand carving with the simplified, expressive language associated with 20th-century Caribbean sculpture.
