Executed in ink and wash with watercolor, the composition depicts a procession of refugees—men, women and children—moving across a barren landscape carrying their possessions. Lintott renders the figures with remarkably economical line and atmospheric washes, creating an immediate and poignant record of civilian displacement during one of Europe's most turbulent periods.

The work is signed/inscribed, titled “Refugees,” and dated 1917.

The date is particularly significant within Lintott's biography. During World War I, Lintott served as secretary to the British Ambassador in Russia and was present in St. Petersburg/Petrograd during the revolutionary period. His documented wartime oeuvre includes The Attack on the Winter Palace, Petrograd, 1917, now associated with the collection of the Imperial War Museum.

Lintott studied in Paris at the Académie Julian and École des Beaux-Arts and became an accomplished painter, watercolorist and draftsman. His work is represented in major institutional collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, British Museum and Imperial War Museum.

Presented exactly as acquired in its aged gilt frame beneath glass. The artwork has not been removed from the frame, cleaned, restored or altered. The frame, mat and backing retain substantial age-related wear and are being preserved as found.
