This piece originates from the French countryside, specifically from historic wine-producing regions.
Known traditionally as a hotte de vendange (grape harvesting hod), it dates back to the 19th or early 20th century. Vineyard workers across famous wine regions like Bordeaux, Champagne, and the Rhône Valley wore these contoured metal containers like backpacks. They secured them with leather straps to collect freshly cut grapes along the narrow rows of vines before tipping them directly into larger collection barrels.
