This striking pair of mid-century Italian ceramic Chinoiserie figures by Eugenio Pattarino (1885–1971) depicts a Chinese man and woman in elaborate traditional-style dress. The figures are beautifully modeled in glazed earthenware/terracotta and richly hand-painted in turquoise, red, white, and brown, with extensive gilt decoration throughout. Comparable examples are described as Pattarino's Chinese ancestral or Chinoiserie figures and are generally dated to the 1950s.
Eugenio Pattarino (1885–1971) was a Florentine sculptor and ceramic artist who studied in Florence, Venice, and Frankfurt, including study under the celebrated Italian painter Giovanni Fattori. He worked in a variety of media, including marble, terracotta, and ceramics, and became particularly known for highly expressive figural sculpture and colorful, hand-decorated ceramic works. His subjects ranged from religious and historical figures to Venetian characters, fantastical subjects, and Asian-inspired Chinoiserie. Pattarino maintained a studio near Florence's Ponte Vecchio, where he produced his distinctive ceramic and terracotta works.
These figures are a wonderful example of Pattarino's fascination with Asian-inspired imagery, combining traditional Chinese motifs with the exuberant modeling and polychrome decoration characteristic of his Italian ceramic work. A highly decorative and unusual matched pair for collectors of Eugenio Pattarino, Italian ceramics, Chinoiserie, or mid-century figural art.
