Calacatta Viola is an Italian marble quarried in the Carrara region of Tuscany, known to Renaissance Florence as Breccia Medicea, the marble of the Medici. Across a cool white ground run veins of violet, burgundy and plum, drawn with the loose confidence of brushwork rather than the regularity of geology. The oak answers in kind: solid European oak smoked to a near-black brown, its grain still legible beneath the finish, so the marble and oak read as two tones of a single warmth. Each top is cut from the block it came from, so no two of these Calacatta Viola marble and oak coffee tables share the same figure.

The oak does the work of holding the stone up. Two solid oak boards interlock at right angles into a cross-leg base, one passing cleanly through the other, the joinery left in full view as the piece's single gesture of craft. Stone meets wood with nothing worked in between them.
