made by the royal porcelain manufactory meissen, germany, late 19th/early 20th century, ca. 1890–1910.

the composition depicts an elegant courtship scene: a richly dressed lady holds a fan to her face as she approaches a gentleman who offers her a small bouquet of flowers.

both figures are dressed in 18th-century fashion, with extraordinary polychrome work, flowers, appliquéd reliefs, and abundant gilt details.

the lady wears an elaborate floral gown with pink and mauve stripes, turquoise blue skirts, and appliquéd roses; the knight wears a yellow coat, floral waistcoat, purple breeches, white stockings, black shoes, and carries a sword.

the group rests on an elegant oval rocaille-style base, lavishly embellished with gold and decorated with small appliquéd flowers.

the meissen crossed swords mark is in blue underglaze on the base, along with original maker's marks and a painter's number in red. Model o 158.
