Pair of model 232 wall sconces designed by Bruno Gatta for Stilnovo, Italy, 1954. A striking pair of Italian mid-century wall lights characterized by their sculptural construction and beautifully balanced proportions.
Each sconce features a large oval white diffuser supported by a slender black metal arm extending from a rounded white wall mount. The contrasting black and white finish gives the lamps a particularly graphic appearance, while the diffusers create a soft atmospheric light and a warm glow on the wall.
The long angled arms and seemingly floating diffusers give the sconces a light, architectural character typical of innovative Italian lighting from the 1950s.
The sconces remain in very good condition, with minor signs of age and use consistent with their age. Bruno Gatta was one of the founders of Stilnovo, the influential Milanese lighting company known for its experimental forms and innovative approach to modern lighting design.
