An iconic Richard Schultz “Contour” chaise lounge for Knoll, designed in 1966, exemplifying the refined architectural approach that made Schultz one of the defining figures of American modern outdoor furniture.
Originally developed during the period when Florence Knoll commissioned Schultz to create outdoor furniture capable of withstanding the demanding salt-air environment of her Florida residence, the design combines sculptural elegance with functional engineering. The chaise features a graceful cast-aluminum frame in a crisp white finish, supporting a continuous suspended mesh sling precisely shaped to follow the contours of the body. Cream-colored vinyl edging follows the dramatic serpentine profile and emphasizes the lounge's exceptionally light, floating appearance.
The chaise retains its Richard Schultz label, an important detail for collectors and design professionals seeking documented examples of Schultz's work.
With its low architectural silhouette, open construction, and fluid ergonomic form, the Contour chaise works beautifully in Mid-Century Modern, California Modern, Palm Springs Modernist, International Style, Bauhaus-inspired, Minimalist, and contemporary interiors, as well as covered terraces, pool houses and sophisticated indoor/outdoor environments.
An excellent choice for collectors and interior designers sourcing furniture alongside the work of Florence Knoll, Harry Bertoia, Eero Saarinen, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Walter Lamb, Russell Woodard, Brown Jordan, Vladimir Kagan, and Charles and Ray Eames. Its sculptural profile also makes it particularly effective as a standalone statement chaise in a modern bedroom, dressing room, sunroom, gallery-like living space, or architectural residence.
