This is a Feuilles de Choux style tapestry which is 50 x 43 inches.
These tapestries are characterized by immense curved foliage among which evolves a fantastic bestiary. A flora and fauna evoking the wild forests.
They responded to the decorative function of the tapestry and constituted "rooms of greenery" from which emanated an atmosphere of tranquility and reverie.
In 1550, the city of Audenarde in Flanders had become a specialty of Feuilles de Choux - leaves of cabbage - knowns as Aristoloche - which were widely distributed in Belgium and Flanders during the seventeenth century.
The main subject of these tapestries is a wild nature, with a mysterious and inhospitable character, populated by real or fantastic animals. The central plan is invaded by imposing leaves and appearance of wild animals. In the foreground, vegetation is generally illustrated with the presence of pruned trees, fruit trees, and small flowers.
The back is with hooks and a label. Not handmade.
